چکیده

We measure the mobility of nanoparticles at low concentrations in non-Newtonian semidilute aqueous solutions of high-molecular-weight polyelectrolyte polymers. Using optical microscopy and particle tracking algorithms, we image and track hydrophilic polystyrene nanoparticles of diameter 400 nm moving in aqueous solutions of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide of molecular weight 8 000 000 Da and concentration of 0.0424.2 g/L. The effective diffusivity of the nanoparticles in the semidilute polymer solutions, extracted from the long-time limit of the mean-squared displacement using the Stokes−Einstein relation, is greater than that calculated from the zero-shear-rate viscosity measured using bulk rheology. For concentrations c > 0.42 g/L, the meansquare displacements (MSD) of particles measured as a function of lag time revealed that the particle dynamics are subdiffusive at short time scales and are Fickian on long time scales. The time scale for the crossover from subdiffusive to Fickian dynamics increases with increasing polymer concentration; moreover, it is longer than the relaxation time scale for polymer blobs and shorter than that for the chain. Our results suggest that the nanoparticle dynamics are coupled to those of the polymers on a length scale intermediate between the blob size and the end-to-end distance of the polymer.

Synthesis of HA nanoparticles in the presence of anionic and cationic polyelectrolyte

Nanosized hydroxyapatite (HA) powders have been synthesized by an inverse microemulsion system using cyclohexane, an anionic surfactant and aqueous solutions of calcium nitrate tetrahydrate and biammonium hydrogen phosphate in the presence of anionic and caionic polyelectrolyte with the inducement of ultrasound irradiation. Prepared HA in presence of anionic polyelectrolyte has a different morp...

Structure and rheology of polyelectrolyte complex coacervates.

Scattering investigations of the structure and chain conformations, and the rheological properties of polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) comprising model polyelectrolytes are presented. The use of charged polypeptides - (poly)-lysine and (poly)-glutamic acid with identical backbones allowed for facile tuning of the system parameters, including chain length, side-chain functionality, and chirality...

Capillary electrophoresis of RNA in dilute and semidilute polymer solutions.

We report separations of RNA molecules (281-6583 nucleotides) by capillary electrophoresis in dilute and semidilute solutions of aqueous hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) ether in varying buffers. RNA mobility and peak band widths are examined under both nondenaturing and also denaturing conditions. From studies of sieving polymer concentration and chain length, it is found that good separations can ...

Interacting rigid polyelectrolytes

The persistence length of charged linear polymers in semidilute solution must increase substantially upon addition of salt. For very long polymers the persistence length increases as the salt concentration to the 5/2 power provided this salt concentration is not too large. In deriving this scaling we correct our previous prediction in light of a recent paper by Barrat and Joanny, and in agreeme...
